Few things destroy your self-confidence more than thinning hair. You can do your best to cover it up, but true relief comes from treating the primary cause of your hair issues. Our hair restoration expert does exactly that.

Dr. Martin Maag at Honest Hair Restoration is dedicated to getting to the bottom of your thinning hair, and then, with his comprehensive list of treatment options, helping you find your confidence once again with restored hair.

Here are the five most common causes of thinning hair.

#1 Genetics

Most people who deal with thinning hair can blame their family tree. Genetics play a huge role in everything about you, including your hairline. Hair thinning caused by genetics is known as androgenic alopecia, but you might know it as male pattern baldness and female pattern hair loss.  If you have this genetic disorder, you’ll notice your hairline receding and your hair becoming thinner, typically on your scalp and the crown of your head.

#2 Hormonal changes

Hormones can be just as much at fault for your thinning hair as genetics. Thyroid problems and menopause, for example, are common hormonal disrupters that can cause thinning hair.

Problems with your thyroid gland and the hormones it releases can cause issues with the normal production and development of hair at the root. Thyroid disorders are also closely linked to alopecia, which is an autoimmune disorder that leads to patches of hair loss.

Similarly, women going through menopause can suffer from thinning hair. During menopause, your body stops making the hormones estrogen and progesterone. These are two important female sex hormones that regulate everything from sexual health to keeping your hair on your head. Without them, you’ll notice slower hair growth and thinning spots.

#3 Medications and Supplements

You take medications and supplements to treat illnesses and support your body. Although there are many benefits to taking them, they can also result in thinning hair.

Medications, supplements, and other treatments like radiation therapy lead to two types of hair loss: telogen effluvium and anagen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium occurs when the drug forces your hair follicle into the telogen phase of development much earlier than it should. This phase is when your normally fully grown hair falls out and the hair growth process begins again. You’ll notice this type of hair loss within two to four months of taking the medications.

Anagen effluvium is much more aggressive because it attacks the hair while it’s still growing. The hair is unable to develop normally and falls out. This type of hair loss takes effect quicker than telogen effluvium and will typically present after a few days or weeks.

All sorts of medications from birth control and acne medications to cancer and cholesterol drugs can have this negative effect on your hair.

#4 Stressful events

Childbirth, malnutrition, severe infections, major surgeries, or simply chronic stress can all wreak havoc on your hair. Your body’s response to perceived danger throws your hair from its early growing stages of development into its shedding phases. This violent shift is called telogen effluvium. Stress-related hair thinning typically starts approximately six weeks to three months following the stressful event.

#5 Hairstyles and treatments

Sometimes your hair loss is your own doing. Certain hairstyles that pull your hair tight like pigtails, high ponytails, and cornrows result in a type of hair loss called traction alopecia. Other permanent or hot-oil hair treatments can have the same effect. Constantly pulling and treating your hair may cause scarring, which leads to permanent hair loss.
